Back Badge Reunion 2017

GLOUCESTERSHIRE REUNION, THE RIFLES & RGBW ASSOCIATION, SATURDAY 18th MARCH 2017

The Gloucestershire Reunion of The Rifles and RGBW Regimental Association will take place on Saturday 18th March 2017. The Reunion comprises three parts:

• Back Badge Church Service at St Mary de Lode Church, Archdeacon Street, Gloucester, GL1 2QT. All are asked to be seated by 1.45 pm.
• Afternoon tea reception, from 3.00 to 4.00 pm, within the Chapter House of Gloucester Cathedral.
• Evening drinks at The Gables Hotel (Best Western Bristol North), Bristol Road, Falfield, GL12 8DL, beginning at 6.00 pm, followed by dinner at 7.00 pm.

The Reunion Dinner will include a three course meal. One bottle of red wine and one bottle of white wine, as well as water, will be placed on each table. The cost is £20.00 per head and includes coffee and mints after dinner. Pre-dinner drinks are not included within this price. After dinner there will be music and for those that wish, dancing. With respect to transport, Branches should liaise with each other concerning arrangements and funding of coaches.

The Gables Hotel have set aside a number of rooms on the night of 18th March at a cost of £72 per standard double room, including breakfast. Rooms should be booked direct with the Gables Hotel on 01454 260502 quoting the booking reference allocation Rifles/RGBW.

The death of Sgt TJ (Tom) Cawley

The death of 23866102 Sgt TJ (Tom) Cawley aged 80 yrs. Tom served in the D&D’s and the DERR from 1961-1970.
Tom passed away in the early hours of the 22 Dec 2016 at his home on the island of Jersey His funeral will take place at Jersey crematorium on the 9 January 2017 at 12 o'clock

New Constitution

Dear Members,

 

Many are already aware there will be an Extraordinary Meeting of The Rifles and Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regimental Association at Devizes on Saturday 18th February 2017.  The purpose of the meeting is to adopt the Association’s new Constitution.  Adoption of the Constitution at the Annual General Meeting held, this Autumn, at Aldershot was not possible.  It will be exceedingly disappointing if the new Constitution is not successfully adopted on Saturday 18th February 2017.  Consequently should any member have any comment on the wording of the proposed Constitution, as attached, you are asked to send succinct notes clearly stating the paragraph to which you may refer as well as any suggested wording by way of replacement or addition.  

 

The most recent version of the Constitution is attached.  Please any keep comment simple, short and to the point and send it to Lt Col (Retd) Mike Motum (This email address is being protected from spambots. EGM Calling Notice

I would like to make All Members aware that the Regimental HQ (Salisbury) Office in The Wardrobe Regimental Museum is to close wef 16th December 2016. It will move to RHQ The Rifles (Salisbury), Peninsula Barracks, Romsey Road, Winchester SO23 8TS over the Christmas Stand Down and is to re-open for business on Wednesday 4th January 2017. The Calling Notice is found below. The aim is to approve the Revised Constitution. This will be emailed to All Members together with a Meeting Agenda at the end of January 2017. As many as are able are encouraged to attend.

It is with great sadness that I pass onto you the sad news received from David Leadbetter informing us of the death of 514915 Capt EA (Eric) Millard.

Eric served with the DERR and his service history spans from 1960-87. Funeral details are to follow.

MR M R DAWES BEM

MR M R DAWES BEM

 Many will be sad to hear of the recent news concerning the death of Mr Michael (Dickie) Dawes, aged 68 years old.  Born on 1st May 1948, he enlisted in April 1966 and subsequently joined 1st Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment.  Following his initial years Dickie Dawes became one of an exceptional group of Non-Commissioned Officers serving at regimental duty and beyond.  He made his mark during successive operational tours in Northern Ireland and elsewhere.  He was Mentioned in Dispatches in 1972 and awarded the British Empire Medal in 1979.  Later, he fulfilled an ambition by attaining the rank of WO1.  Thereafter, and having completed regular service, he was re-employed within a non-deployable role.    

 The Funeral of Dickie Dawes will be held at the South Bristol Cemetery and Crematorium, Bridgwater Road, Bedminster Down, Bristol, BS13 7AS (0117 903 8330) on Friday 2nd December 2016.  The Funeral Service will begin at 1.00 pm.  Family flowers only, donations if desired may be made to ‘Cancer Research UK’ via the Funeral Directors: Arthur. E. Davey & Sons, 82 Silver Street, Nailsea, North Somerset, BS48 2DS (01275 852307).  Members of The Gloucestershire Regiment and their families, as well as others in the Army that knew Dickie and his own family, will be welcomed.

 Representatives from the Association and The Rifles are also welcome as are Standard Bearer with their Standards; medals may be worn.  Similarly the wearing of regimental ties and blazers is encouraged.  The Service will be led by Padre Andrew Latifa of 1 RIFLES.  Following the Funeral Service there will be a wake at Woodspring Golf Club, Yanley Lane, Long Ashton, BS41 9LR.  Those attending the wake are asked to pass their names to Mrs Debbie Hards, the Administrative Officer at The Rifles office Taunton (01823 333434) || This email address is being protected from spambots. The death of WO1 HL (Len) Jones

Ladies & Gentlemen

It is with great sadness that I pass onto you the news received from
Australia regarding the death of WO1 HL (Len) Jones. This email was sent by
Len's dear friend Colleen. 

Len served with the Royal Berkshire Regiment from 1929-1954 enlisting at
Aldershot and seeing service in Shorncliffe, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Suez
Canal and India. 

Hi Sue,

This is to advise that our dear neighbour Len Harrington-Jones, passed away
on 10th October, aged 102 years.  He was a true English gentleman, and was
always keen to talk about his days in the English Army.    He will be sadly
missed.

The late Major Alan Pickford

It is with great sadness and regret that I write to advise that Major GRA(Alan) Pickford TD died peacefully in Salisbury Hospital on the evening of the 31st October last.  Further details will be passed to you when they are known.
