Births, Deaths and Marriages - 2013

The death of Sgt Fred Ferris

Fred Ferris, ex Sergeant in the 1st Battalion of the Wiltshire passed away on the 22nd November 2013 aged 82 years old.

As well as serving with the Wiltshire Regiment in Hong Kong during the same time as myself, 1952-53 I believe he was the only National Sergeant in the regiment at that time. I am not absolutely too sure on that point though! Perhaps that point could be checked?

Fred was the Town Crier to Swindon for many many years and was always immaculately turned out and won many competitions in the world of Town Criers.

His funeral is to be held on Thursday 5th December at 12 noon at the Kingsdown Crematorium at 12 noon.

Death of Ron Keeping

It is my sad duty to inform the staff at Salisbury of the sad passing of a former member of the Royal Berkshire Regiment, Mr Ronald (Ron) Keeping of Brixham, Devon.

Although Ron was to be transferred to the Royal West Kent Regiment during the course of the Second World War and with whom he fought at Monte Casino, where he was to be badly wounded, his service with the Royal Berkshire Regiment was a source of great pride to him down the years. For many years he was the Standard Bearer for the Paignton and Brixham Royal British Legion Branches. As such he gave outstanding service and in addition to all of the normal parades associated with this office, he attended and paraded the Standards at countless funeral services for ex-members of HM Forces. I had the privilege of being asked by Ron to officiate at his late Wife's funeral in 2004 and he asked if I would conduct his funeral when the time came (indeed he actually included this request in his Will) and it is a great privilege for me to be able to do so. In seeking to fulfil Ron's wishes I am very aware that he wants a 'Military' Service which I am now putting together. There will be two RBL Standards (and possibly more) on parade and Ron's medals, beret and Union Flag will be on the coffin. In addition I am arranging for a poppy wreath which will have the badge of the Royal Berkshire Regiment in its centre to be placed at the head of the coffin during the crematorium service. Last Post and Reveille will be sounded during the course of the Service and the final piece of music that will be played (which he himself asked me for) will be the Regimental Quick March of The Royal Berkshire Regiment, 'The Dashing White Sergeant'. The Service Sheet will have a photo of Ron on the front cover and the one thing that I would like to place on the back are the words of the Regimental Collect of The Royal Berkshire Regiment. At the moment the date of the Service has not been finalised but it will probably be towards the end of next week (possibly Friday) and it is being held at Torbay Crematorium here in Devon. Kindest regards Peter Haywood
