43rdWessex Division Memorial Pilgrimage Longleat 20 July 2018
On a very warm summer’s day a small but dedicated band from the Warminster Branch supported by members of the Warminster RBL assembled in the Longleat Visitors Car Park and were met by the staff of the Longleat Estate. This was the beginning of the annual pilgrimage to the 43rdWessex Division Memorial which is sited within the grounds of the Marquis of Bath’s vast estate. 4th and 5th Wilts were part of the 43rdWessex Division, as were 4thSomerset LI and 4th and 5th Dorset.
By the use of two off road vehicles the Estate staff were able to shuttle the assembled part to the memorial site and once we had recovered the Venerable Alan Jeans, who had gone off on a forced route march in sympathy with the route 43rdWessex Division took across western Europe in 1944-45, we held a very simple but meaningful service to commemorate the actions of the Division from July 1944 to May 1945.
Service over, we reversed the shuttling process back to the Longleat Visitors restaurant where we were entertained to a very welcomed cup of tea and cakes. Congratulations to John Case for arranging the pilgrimage and for the excellent day out.
