The Stroud Branch is a small, close knit, group of members. Unfortunately earlier this year Dave Timbrell, our long standing member and ex Standard Bearer, suffered a stroke which involved some time recovering in hospital. He is now home and taking things easy, but is dependent on a zimmer frame to move around in the house. This summer Richard Green was involved in a car accident but after a spell of recuperation he on the way to recovery, although his long awaited hip operation had to be cancelled.
Our Secretary Scott McBryde, together with branch member and second Standard Bearer Duncan Cameron, attended the funeral of the late Mathew Henderson-Williams at Dursley Tabernacle Church on Monday 3 September. Mathew had served with the Glosters/RGBW/Rifles and was ranked Cpl at the time of his discharge. While serving in Northern Ireland he unfortunately had an accident which resulted in him being wheelchair bound until his death.
On 10 October Scott paraded the Stroud Valleys Standard at Tewkesbury Cemetery for the Dedication of a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone for Pte Henry John Waylen who was a member of the Territorial Force who fought with 1st/5thGlosters in France and subsequently joined one of the two Glosters battalions that went to Macedonia. He contracted tuberculosis in Salonika, returned home and died in 1917.
His grave at Tewkesbury cemetery was never properly marked and Tewkesbury Historical Society alerted the CWGC who made a headstone which was installed by his grave in May of this year.
Looking ahead to November, Paul Whitcher and Scott McBryde will be marching at the Cenotaph on Sunday 11th. Consequently Stroud Army Cadets will very kindly be laying a Stroud Valleys Branch wreath at the Remembrance Ceremony at Stroud Park Gardens. Scott and Carl Vizor are participating in the event at Cheltenham Race Course on 18thNovember, when ex Glosters march past the Grandstand in WWI costume in tribute to those men and women from the County lost their lives in The Great War.
At the time of writing we are in the planning stage for our Branch Christmas lunch in early December. The first Branch meeting in 2019 will be on Tuesday 5thMarch.
