BATTLE OF IMJIN RIVER 22ND - 25TH APRIL 1951
Today, 69 years ago, saw the first day’s action on what was to become known as “The Battle of the Imjin River” or “The Battle of Gloster Hill”. During the next few days, history has written about some of the greatest acts of unit gallantry and outstanding performance of duty, made by the men of a small British Army Brigade in South Korea.
There are far too many stories and accounts to document here on what took place during that battle, but it was of such magnitude that it has been remembered every year since around this time.
For many years, the Somerset Branch of the R&RGBW Association has organised an annual commemorative Imjin lunch to ensure those gallant men who took part in that action are not forgotten and today's survivors can get together, in cordial surroundings with other members of Regimental Associations; last year there were over 130 people in attendance.
Unfortunately, this year due to the dreaded virus, we had to cancel the event at the Taunton. Despite being extremely disappointed, it has made us more determined to raise the bar for the future. Next year is the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Imjin and we would like to make this a memorable event. We are initially planning for the event to take place on Sunday 25th April 2021 at Taunton Rugby Club and will confirm and issue instructions later.
Can all those interested please take note of the date and spread the word amongst friends and colleagues, particularly any Korean veterans. Their numbers decrease every year and age makes it difficult for many of them to get to the event unassisted. Can everyone please try to seek out and assist as many veterans as possible and get them to the 70th Commemorative Lunch, thank you.
I have received the following letters of thanks received before the virus outbreak.
Kensington Palace: His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester thanks you for your kind invitation to the Imjin Commemorative Lunch at Taunton Rugby Club on Sunday 17th May 2020. The Duke was extremely pleased to have been invited but, regrettably, is unable to attend that day due to previously planned commitments. His Royal Highness conveys his best wishes to you and all the members of the RGBW Regimental Association and very much hopes you all enjoy a highly successful lunch.
Buckingham Palace: His Royal Highness Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh, would like to thank you for your letter enclosing loyal greetings. Your message from all those attending the Annual Imjin Commemorative Lunch at the Hyde Suite, Taunton Rugby Club, on Sunday 17th May 2020 is very much appreciated. I would like to give everyone my best wishes for a very happy occasion together. Signed PHILIP Colonel in Chief.
