Received from Stephen Wensley

It is with sadness that I report the passing of my grandfather, Clifford Wensley, who passed away at home on Monday 13th January 2020 at the age of 101.

Cliff served with HQ company of the 4th Wilts in the latter part of WWII, having been transferred from the 1/6 Queen's Royal Regiment when Monty was reinforcing the TA battalions coming into the line with veterans ahead of D-Day. With the Wilts he would have been involved in the action around the assault on hill 112, Mont Pinçon, the Seine crossing, the 30 Corps attack up hell's highway during market garden, operation veritable and the Rhine crossing, the drive through Germany to Bremen. After hostilities he was based at different locations in Northern Germany, including the former Belsen concentration camp which by then had been re-designated a displaced person camp, before being demobbed in 1946 having turned down the opportunity for promotion to Sergeant.

Cliff's funeral takes place at Gittisham Church in Devon, on Friday 24th January 2020 at 11am, where Cliff had been churchwarden for 25 years, having moved to the village in the 1950s to take over his elder brother's farm.
