Branch News from 2014

Meetings continue to be held bimonthly at the Newport Conservative Club on the 4'*' Wednesday in the morning starting in January. The AGM is at the April Meeting. The small but regular attendance reflects the format of a morning Meet followed by lunch THE 2013 Christmas Lunch was enjoyable and successful with the Raffle proceeds split between Branch
funds and "Challenge and Adventure" a local charity working with young people.

The annual Back Badge Service on 17 March was again held at Northwood Church, where we are always made most welcome. The service was well supported and we had 12 standards on parade. We were pleased to welcome Col. David Langford, Deputy Lord Lieutenant, to the service as our guest of honour. Following the service members and guests enjoyed lunch at Newport Conservative Club.

In June we organised a D-Day 70th Anniversary commemorative lunch which we invited members of other small ex-service associations to share with us. The lunch was held at The Propeller Inn, Bembridge where there is also a small museum of military memorabilia. In keeping with the D-Day theme the tables, named after the D-Day beaches, were decorated in red, white and blue with the flags of the UK, USA and Canada together with poppies and at each place setting was a crocheted poppy coaster which has been made by Karen. The event raised a total of £145 for the RBL Poppy Appeal through a raffle and donations.

We paraded our standard at the Armed Forces Day event in Ryde (June) and during the year members have attended local island events held marking the 100th anniversary of the commencement of WWl as well the Poppy Appeal launch.

Several members attended the reunion at Brock Barracks in July and two members also attended the Association AGM in Bulford (October). Karen Gibson
