Dedication of a Memorial Stone for Pte Miles VC

On 23rd October2018 theForest of Dean Branch attended a ceremony at the Chapel, High Street, Clearwell, in honour of Forester Pte Francis Miles VC. Clearwell is the birthplace of Francis Miles VC and his grave lies in the cemetery behind the Chapel.

The Parish Council had been awarded a memorial paving stone as part of a government initiative to mark the Centenary of the First World War. The heroic actions taken by Private Francis Miles of 1/5 Battalion The Glosters at Landrecies, France, on 23rd October 1918 resulted in him being awarded the Victoria Cross. Major General Robin Grist spoke at the ceremony about Private Miles’ military and private life and family members of Pte Miles VC (who had travelled over from Ireland) unveiled the memorial paving stone. Standard Bearers from the Association and British Legion were present and wreaths were laid by the family, Parish Council, The Rifles, Forest of Dean Branch and the Royal British Legion.
The Forest of Dean branch members hold an annual wreath laying ceremony at Pte Miles’ grave and photos can be seen on the branch webpage of this event.
