Somerset Branch Branch News

Pleased to say that Somerset Branch continues in good health, another two new younger members in recent months each who have served with RGBW which is encouraging. We meet quarterly on a Sunday morning at a small Royal British Legion Club in the village of Pawlett near Bridgwater. An RBL Club that is going from strength to strength bucking the trend as others are falling by the wayside. We are joined at meetings by our ladies and after the business of the meeting we enjoy together a most enjoyable Sunday roast carvery provided by the RBL Chef at the modest price of just £8. We average in the region of 38 persons for lunch.

The Secretary is now active preparing for our Annual Imjin Commemorative lunch taken place on the 19thMay 2019. A flyer with booking form is now available.

Our outing this year was a trip to Minehead, steam hauled on the West Somerset Railway with a fish & chips supper on board for the return journey. Unfortunately yours truly had to miss out on this one as I decided to have a heart attack instead. The day coincided with a 1940’s day with a WW2 home front and military theme. Static displays and enactment groups made it an interesting day. Even Winston Churchill and Charles De Gaulle made an entrance.

On the 22nd June, Harry North was at Odiham in Hampshire for the dedication of a memorial stone to Captain Manley James VC of the Glosters on the centenary of the action for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Earlier in the month Harry North represented the Branch as Standard Bearer at the unveiling of a memorial to a former citizen of Taunton, Marshal of the Royal Air Force Hugh Montague Trenchard, 1st Viscount Trenchard, GCB, OM, GCVO, DSO who was instrumental in establishing the Royal Air Force. He has been described as the Father of the R.A.F.

23rdOctober saw the Branch represented at Clearwell in the Forest of Dean to Commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the award of the Victoria Cross to Forester Francis George Miles, Gloucestershire Regiment.

Members of the Regimental Association gathered at his birthplace in the village of Clearwell in the Forest of Dean. They joined members of the Miles family, representatives of the Rifles, the Royal British Legion, Children of Clearwell School, The Parish Council, Friends and villagers of Clearwell. The occasion was the Dedication of a Memorial Commemoration Stone erected in recognition of his outstanding gallantry on the 23rd October 1918. STROUD VALLEYS BRANCH Annual News

The Stroud Branch is a small, close knit, group of members. Unfortunately earlier this year Dave Timbrell, our long standing member and ex Standard Bearer, suffered a stroke which involved some time recovering in hospital. He is now home and taking things easy, but is dependent on a zimmer frame to move around in the house. This summer Richard Green was involved in a car accident but after a spell of recuperation he on the way to recovery, although his long awaited hip operation had to be cancelled.

Our Secretary Scott McBryde, together with branch member and second Standard Bearer Duncan Cameron, attended the funeral of the late Mathew Henderson-Williams at Dursley Tabernacle Church on Monday 3 September. Mathew had served with the Glosters/RGBW/Rifles and was ranked Cpl at the time of his discharge. While serving in Northern Ireland he unfortunately had an accident which resulted in him being wheelchair bound until his death.

On 10 October Scott paraded the Stroud Valleys Standard at Tewkesbury Cemetery for the Dedication of a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone for Pte Henry John Waylen who was a member of the Territorial Force who fought with 1st/5thGlosters in France and subsequently joined one of the two Glosters battalions that went to Macedonia. He contracted tuberculosis in Salonika, returned home and died in 1917.

His grave at Tewkesbury cemetery was never properly marked and Tewkesbury Historical Society alerted the CWGC who made a headstone which was installed by his grave in May of this year.

Looking ahead to November, Paul Whitcher and Scott McBryde will be marching at the Cenotaph on Sunday 11th. Consequently Stroud Army Cadets will very kindly be laying a Stroud Valleys Branch wreath at the Remembrance Ceremony at Stroud Park Gardens. Scott and Carl Vizor are participating in the event at Cheltenham Race Course on 18thNovember, when ex Glosters march past the Grandstand in WWI costume in tribute to those men and women from the County lost their lives in The Great War.

At the time of writing we are in the planning stage for our Branch Christmas lunch in early December. The first Branch meeting in 2019 will be on Tuesday 5thMarch.
